DEATH OR GLORY IN FLANDERS FIELDS
by Chris Collingwood
The 17th Lancers in Flanders 1916 await the call to go forward to exploit any breakthrough of the enemy's lines by the attacking infantry.
Despite the best of artillery preperations and losses suffered by the attacking infantry, very often gains were such that no breakthrough could be made. The cavalry waited in the hope that they could make use of their mobility, but that hope proved a false one as often the nature of the battlefield itself precluded any such chance of rapid movement, covered as it often was in thick mud, shell holes and barbed wire.
Chris Collingwood has again captured a moment in time during one such action, mounted with lances the 17th Lancers await the call to move forward, a call which as the war progressed never came. It was a time of massive industrialisation of the war effort which would eventually see the disappearance of the once mighty calvary from the battlefield to be replaced by the steel juggernaut of the tank.
