LETTER FROM HOME - 1915
by Chris Collingwood
Two soldiers of the Imperial German Infantry take respite from the savage fighting of March 1915, to catch up on mail from their loved one's at home. Still wearing picklehube helmets and not yet equipped as later in the war with the obligatory gas mask cannister and steel helmets, as the industrialisation of the war increased and its consequent savagery so would the equipment carried change to reflect the increased dangers from shrapnel and gas.
Once again the artist Chris Collingwood has captured the pathos and lonliness of the soldier at the sharp end, cut off from his family and friends at home his comrades at the front would become the world in which his whole life revovled around, suffering and sharing together the horror of the trench warfare of this most vain glorious of wars, and if chance permitted any of lifes little luxury's were often shared with his fellow soldiers.
