STORM OF STEEL - 1917
by Chris Collingwood
The 6th Reserve Division 11th Battalion of the Imperial German Infantry Passchendale 1917, during the Battle of Ypres.
Having moved out of the relative safety of their trench lines and begun the advance towards the enemy the Imperial German infantry 6th Reserve Division 11th Battalion are forced to confront the carnage to be found in no-mans land, ruled as it was by mud and shell holes, barbed wire, and the intense artillery and machine gun fire directed at them from the defensive positions of the British trenches.
The enevitable losses imposed on attacking forces during the majority of the First World War and the nature of the terrain created by the continous shelling limited advances some times to a few hundred feet and in many instances despite the bravery and persistance of the attackers none at all.
Chris Collingwood perhaps one this country's greatest portrait and battle artists again captures the intensity and sheer terror which these soldiers are having to experiance during the most deadly phase of the attack, crossing the barren blasted landscape devoid of cover and bracketed by machine gun and artillery fire.
