The Tiger Ace - Michael Wittman by Chris Collingwood
THE TIGER ACE
SS-Haupsturmführer Michael Wittman
by Chris Collingwood
Wittman, holder of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords was one of the of the most successful German tank commanders in history, destroying more than 138 enemy tanks, and over
140 artillery pieces.
A veteran of Kursk, he is particularly famous for his actions in Normandy, when, on 13 June 1944 during the Battle of Villiers-Bocage, his small company halted the advance of the British 22nd Armoured Brigade, destroying 30 British tanks, 14 half-tracks, and 16 Bren-gun carriers. Although his meteoric career began commanding an assault gun his fame is normally associated with the German PzKwf VI the formidable Tiger I heavy tank. He was killed in action on 8 August 1944 during an attack when commanding a Tiger I, having been ambushed by Canadian and British Sherman tanks.
