The Red Baron by Chris Collingwood
THE RED BARON
Manfred von Richthofen
by Chris Collingwood
Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen also widely known as the Red Baron, was a German fighter pilot with the Imperial German Army Air Service ( Luftstveitkräfte ) during World War I.
Having been officially credited with 80 victories in air combat, he is considered to have been the top Ace of that war. The Red Baron was eventually shot down and killed near Amiens on the 21 April 1918. Some debate exists as to who is credited with his shooting down, a Canadian pilot or members of an Australian machine gun company. Although more often associated with the famous red Fokker triplane fighter which he was flying when he met his death, he is depicted here with his red Albatross fighter in which he actually achieved the majority of his victories.
