THE REPULSE STRIKES BACK!
by Mark Littlejohn TD
On December 10th 1941 off the coast of Malaya the battleship
HMS Prince of Wales and the battlecruiser HMS Repulse were caught without air cover and sunk by Japanese aircraft.
They were the first capital warships to be destroyed by air attack alone. The Prince of Wales was crippled early on during the initial attack, the Repulse fought back but at 12.23 was caught from all sides by torpedo bombers, despite shooting down two of her attackers
she was hit by several torpedoes and sunk. The Prince of Wales then took the brunt of the
attacks and eventually sunk at 13.18, 840 British seamen were lost in this naval tragedy.
