Trench Pals by Chris Collingwood

TRENCH PALS - 1917

by Chris Collingwood

Having recently taken part in an assault on a German trench during the terrible fighting which took place in Flanders during 1917, a British Tommy takes a welcome break for a woodbine and brew, watched closely by a recently liberated member of the German armed forces. No doubt it would become part of this units establishment if conditions permitted and the enemy were slow to launch any counter attack to retake the trench before Allied units could establish themselves.

Chris Collingwood perhaps one this country's greatest portrait and battle artists has once again evoked an image of that First Great War of the modern industrial world which shows how those men caught up in its tragic loss of life and destruction some how found means to try and cope with the horror and deprivations of daily life in the trenches, in this case a much loved and perhaps well cared for companion, would inevitably become the centre of its owners and units affections in the absence of loved one's at home.
